Call Super, Robin Fox, Tirzah, Yves Tumor & more announced for #C2C18

#C2C18: the programme

The avant-pop festival Club To Club returns for its eighteenth edition in Turin, Italy from 1st to 4th November. As one of the most highly regarded festivals in the international music scene, Club To Club brings to Italy an extraordinary lineup in 2018, brimming with Italian exclusives and hotly anticipated performances. For the first time in its history, 25% of the audience will come from abroad.

Aphex Twin, one of the most iconic musicians of the past 30 years, headlines #C2C18 and leads the charge of Italian exclusive performances alongside Beach House, Jamie XX, Iceage, Blood Orange, David August, Vessel, Leon Vynehall, Robin Fox, Serpentwithfeet, Tirzah, Yves Tumour with exclusive Italian sets by Peggy Gou, Avalon Emerson and many more. Elena Colombi, Silvia Kastel, Bienoise, Mana, Primitive Art , Gang of Ducks e Palm Wine will represent The Italian New Wave (ITNW), Club To Club’s platform to promote new Italian musical creativity internationally with special showcases and initiatives.

To celebrate Club To Club’s coming of age, this year’s programme seeks to capture every aspect of the contemporary music scene and create a unique edition: four days of non-stop music in some of the most iconic and fascinating locations in Turin, from the renewed Officine Grandi Riparazioni (Thursday 1st) to the majestic Reggia di Venaria (Sunday 4th), through the post-industrial Lingotto pavilions (Friday 2nd and Saturday 3rd) and Porta Palazzo neighborhood’s block party (Sunday 4th).

Over the years, Club To Club has demonstrated its commitment to discourse with institutions of national significance, as confirmed by the contribution of Fondo Unico per lo Spettacolo accorded by the Ministry of Cultural Activities.

The theme for the edition is “La luce al buio” (light over darkness). Inspired by Nicolas Jaar‘s lead track of his #C2C17 closing set, an unusual and distinctive edit of Franco Battiato’s L’ombra della luce, it was a track made by Jaar, enriched with samples from a Battiato interview. “This year the theme is very poetic” says artistic director Sergio Ricciardone “We have been doing this for a long time: shining a light in the darkness, which also references the making of a show, illuminating a space that had been empty only a few hours previously”.

The 18th edition of Club To Club is an important milestone for the festival that has grown and established itself as an unique artistic entity both in Italy and abroad. Its essential strength is the ability to anticipate musical and cultural movements and present them to its audience, before they reach mainstream consciousness. Club To Club has come of age, but it is ever curious, seeking new waves.

A snapshot of Italy’s favourite festival for new sounds reveals three significant phases: the concept of engaging with club culture, a scene that involved going from club to club in Turin was born in 2002. In 2007, the festival found a new home at Lingotto and the programming evolved to embrace new music genres and expanded into some of the city’s most extraordinary venues. Since 2014, Club To Club has embraced the spectrum of avant pop, from avantgarde sounds to mainstream Italian and international music phenomena, from pioneers who have taken unusual musical paths, such as Franco Battiato, Thom Yorke, Kraftwerk and now Aphex Twin to contemporary artists who will create the sound of the future.

Club To Club also celebrates three important historical elements of the city, the royal at Venaria Palace, the post-industrial at Lingotto and OGR and the urban at Balon – the historical Turin flea market, a new location added this year

From Thursday to Saturday, the AC HOTEL will be a hive of activity with ABSOLUT SYMPOSIUM, a bustling creative hub with panels, workshops, interviews, live radio and musical rooms, curated by Max Dax and Carlo Pastore. A special environment that brings together festival goers, industry folk and artists, akin to the festival backstage with added performances and lively activities.

Festival media partner Radio Raheem will stream live from Symposium bringing the depth of the Club To Club experience to its listeners.

A ROOM will be dedicated to IED – #C2C18’s content partner, where Sound Design students will be tasked with making an audiovisual installation in collaboration with Roland. During Symposium the sixth edition of the bi-annual OVER will be launched, under the editiorial and creative direction of Undesign agency. Over will be distributed at NEWS STAND SYMPOSIUM.

A highlight event of Symposium is the exclusive lab in association with SOUNDMIT, the Italian event dedicated to the world of synths, electronic musical instruments and musical new technologies.

On Sunday 4th Club Palazzo, Club To Club presents its Block Party at a new location – the 150 year old historical market of Balon organized by Xplosiva in collaboration with Associazione Commercianti Balon, taking over the whole neighborhood of Porta Palazzo from late morning onwards with live music, meetings, exhibitions, enogastronomic tours with traditional & digital artisans, selected by the creators of Emporium and the Balon market.

From 10 am to 9 pm there will be music, dance, street art, guided tours and panoramic rides with the Turin-eye, social initiatives presented by Sermig Arsenal of Peace, enogastronomic and guided tours exploring the works of art of this urban neighborhood.

Club To Club’s long term partner Red Bull Music takes residence in the magnificent Cortile del Maglio, the historical venue of the royal Military Arsenal forges. For this edition, Red Bull Music presents “DIGGIN’ IN THE CARTS”: the Turin stop of the worldwide tour showcasing two of the most revered Japanese videogame soundtrack composers and Streets of Rage’s music creators, Yuzo Koshiro and Motohiro Kawashima who will perform an exclusive show with Hyperdub founder, Kode9. They will be joined on stage by Nick Dwyer, Tokyo based dj and author of the “DIGGIN’ IN THE CARTS” videoseries.

On Sunday 4th the closing party of the festival will take place at Reggia di Venaria, curated by 4:3, Boiler Room‘s innovative platform for film. Dubbed “Netflix for the underground“, the platform explores themes of performance, identity, youth culture and anti-establishment. Since its launch in June 2018, 4:3 has collaborated with artists as mixed as Flying Lotus, Holly Blakey, Janelle Monae, Charles Atlas, Jenn Nkiru, Ryuichi Sakamoto, Elijah Wood, Peaches, John Akomfrah and Leilah Weinraub.
