Dan Denorch (Janus), Helena Hauff, Lanark Artefax, Lorenzo Senni, Ninos Du Brasil, Not Waving and Richard Russel presents: Everything is Recorded. Join the #C2C17 line up
Leading Italian avant-pop Festival Club To Club returns with its seventeenth edition #C2C17: cheek to cheek, to be held in Turin, Italy from 1st to 7th November 2017, during Contemporary Art Week, in synergy with a calendar of events that annually turns Italy’s most elegant and regal city into the European capital of contemporary culture for a week.
Cheek To Cheek is the chosen theme for the 17th edition. In recent years, dance has been more frequently considered an individual experience. Conversely, Club To Club represents for many a unique experience exactly because, in a world in which the digital world dominates the physical, it’s capable of shaping new scenarios, made of real communities and based on human contact. Cheek To Cheek hence claims the relevance of the social aspect in music as a proper “IRL social network”.Joining the Festival lineup are Dan Denorch – Janus, Helena Hauff, Lanark Artefax, Lorenzo Senni, Ninos Du Brasil, Not Waving and Richard Russell presents: Everything is recorded.
A transglobal programme, with over 30 artists from 10 countries over seven days of festival, including Kraftwerk with The Catalogue 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8, Nicolas Jaar, Richie Hawtin, Arca & Jesse Kanda, Bonobo, Kamasi Washington, Mura Masa, Actressand many more.
The programme will unravel through surprising and unique locations, such as the newly renewed OGR Torino, the post-industrial pavilions of Lingotto and the majestic Palace of Venaria, and will host artists among the most important names in the international musical and creative scene.
Innovators and pioneers: from history to present and beyond
Kraftwerk created the soundtrack for the 21st century digital age. Pioneers in electronic music and an endless source of inspiration for a wide range of musical genres (from Electro to Hip Hop, from Techno to SynthPop), they have made musical history and attained worldwide recognition spanning more than four decades. At Club To Club they will perform their 3-D concert series “The Catalogue – 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8“: a chronological exploration of Kraftwerk’s sonic and visual experiments that presents eight classic master works from across their celebrated repertoire with spectacular 3D visualisations and effects.
The increasingly popular New York-based Chilean musician and producer Nicolas Jaarpresents a live performance drawing on the material of his recent album ‘Sirens’, a release that confirmed his position as a key player of this decade’s electronic music scene with its unique mix of synthetic sounds, jazz, classical and psychedelia that describes the fragility of democracy by revisiting Jaar’s family history.
The master of minimal techno Richie Hawtin challenges the distinction between dj set and live with “CLOSE – Spontaneity & Synchronicity”: a show which blurs the boundary between man and machine, tearing down the barriers between performer and audience.
Outlining the international sound of today
Venezuelan musician, producer and singer Arca (who has worked for the likes of Bjork, FKA twigs and Kanye West) makes a return to Club To Club for the Italian premiere of his new live show. His third critically acclaimed self-titled album released by XL Recordings, that also features him as a singer, will be the core of his performance enhanced by the surreal visuals of Jesse Kanda.
The challenging and extreme sound experiments of Ben Frost, the Australian born, Iceland based composer who recently scored the soundtrack to the Sky tv series ‘Fortitude’ will be explored as he plays brand new music at Club To Club in an unmissable collaboration with MFO.
Live on stage with his band, Los Angeles sax player Kamasi Washington, whose collaboration with Kendrick Lamar and prodigious album “The Epic” earned him a leading position in the new jazz scene, will also perform music from his new EP “Harmony of Difference”.
Soul, funk, disco, electronica make up the colourful sound of Jungle, the London collective that in 2014 won critics and audiences with its eponymous debut album and is currently working on new material.
The Black Madonna has become one of the most in demand dj / producers in the world of club music thanks to the way she blends house, disco and techno in a broad and inclusive vision, with an attitude which is exhilarating and without compromise. And there are great expectations for the live performance by Bonobo, the British electronic music veteran who recently released his moving and colourful sixth album “Migration” on Ninja Tune. Founder of XL Recordings, Richard Russell presents his project named Everything Is Recorded, which in recent months has already released a series of tracks with guests including Sampha, Ibeyi and Kamasi Washington.
Sounds from the underground and new perspectives
The #C2C17 programme explores in depth some of the most innovative underground music scenes.
With regard to this, the presence of experimental producer Jlin is key: with her latest and most potent work to date ‘Black Origami’, she leaves the conventions of footwork behind, instead taking inspiration by a profound encounter between spirituality and movement. For many critics, the album is already considered among the best of 2017, as is the breathtaking ‘AZD’ by Actress which took it’s inspiration from Blade Runner, Rammellzee and Gabriel Fauré’s Requiem.
Powell returns to Club To Club, with an audio-visual show that sees his music working in synergy with visuals from Wolfgang Tillmans. Powell is one of the most unpredictable artists in the new British electronic scene, as demonstrated by the challenging attitude of his debut album “Sport”, released on XL Recordings. German photographer Tillmans is the first non-English winner of the Turner Prize (2000), and has collaborated with artists ranging from Pet Shop Boys to Frank Ocean. His works were recently collected in a solo exhibition at Tate Modern, where he also debuted his show with Powell. Based in Hamburg, Helena Hauff has been delighting international audiences with to her engaging dj sets and to ‘Discreet Desires’, one of the best electronic albums of the last few years. There’s a real cult surrounding Demdike Stare, the English duo who explore the most esoteric side of electronic music on their invigorating new album ‘Wonderland’. A dense, captivating and impressionist sound experience is offered by Laurel Halo, the producer and musician born in Michigan, now resident in Berlin: with her new album ‘Dust’ she brings together her most singular work to date. Berlin-based DJ, producer and musician Bill Kouligas is the founder of PAN, a label that for almost 10 years has nurtured artists such as Lee Gamble, M.E.S.H. and Yves Tumor, sharing their futuristic vision. His contemporary approach explores the interaction between languages of graphic design, video and electronic music.
A Berliner who was born in New York, Dan DeNorch was the co-founder of club night and label Janus, and represents an unusual global and ecletic musical vision.
Debuts and promises for the next future
In the wake of the resounding popularity in Italy with songs such as “Nove maggio” e “Tu t’e scurdat’ ‘e me”, the Liberato project comes to Club To Club, with a brand new audiovisual show debuting for the occasion.
Mura Masa is the stage name for the up-and-coming 21-years-old British producer with a very individual sound who just released his eponymous debut album, featuring a host of high profile guests including Damon Albarn and A$AP Rocky.
Welsh singer and producer Kelly Lee Owens also debuted in 2017 with a stunning album titled after her own name, a hypnotic and delightful blend of dream pop and ambient techno, while Norwegian duo Smerz (Henriette Motzfeldt and Catharina Stoltenberg) unravel their electronic/r&b sound through a series of singles, the most recent of them being ‘Oh My My’, which sees them joining the roster of XL Recordings.
Yves Tumor is one of the most atypical artists of his generation. His recent debut record “Serpent Music” (released on experimental Berlin label Pan) is rich in original ideas, moving between psychedelic r&b and experimental rhythms.
Also: K Á R Y Y N, the American composer of Armenian-Syrian descent who recently released her dazzling debut EP “Quanta 1”; Visible Cloaks, the Portland-based duo that reimagines Japanese ambient and pop as in their recent album “Reassemblage”; the shape-shifting Canadian producer Jacques Greene who will be presenting material from “Feel Infinite”, his long-awaited debut album which effortlessly mixes house, bass, hip-hop and R&B.
IDM and its irregular rhythms are the inspiration for up-and-coming Scottish producer Lanark Artefax.
The Italian New Wave
Many artists in the Club To Club lineup belong to The Italian New Wave, the project promoting the new Italian music creativity worldwide. Among the most well known is Lorenzo Senni, whose remarkable experimental attitude and originality in reworking ’90’s rave culture have allowed him to achieve a broad audience and critical acclaim, as well as a signing to prestigious British label Warp Records, which released his most recent and much-praised EP ‘Persona’.
Ninos Du Brasil is also a recurring name in some of the most important international festivals: the duo translates its fresh mix of techno, batucada and samba into carnevalesque and cathartic shows, and will introduce their new album ‘Vida Eterna’ at Club To Club.
London resident Not Waving (Alessio Natalizia) combines analogic sounds with the most adrenalinic EBM, as demonstrated on his recent work ‘Animals’ released on Powell’s Diagonal label.
Shapednoise falls somewhere between electronic and noise techno. With his intense, sharp and captivatingly unique style he has demonstrated his unquestionable versatility, gaining the appreciation of illustrious pioneers like Aphex Twin.
Finally, a debut for Mana, the new project for Turin producer Daniele Mana (already known as Vaghe Stelle). His new EP ‘Creature’ is released on Kode9’s Hyperdub label. Over eight tracks, he ingests Shostakovitch, Drexciya, Darkthrone, Frank Ocean and Paul Lansky, and refashions them into an almost operatic record – a rich, melodrama of dark tension and excitable in-your-face synth melodies.

PARTNERS & SPECIAL PROJECTS
One of Club To Club’s features is that it represents a unique immersive experience. All of the special projects that enriched the Festival in Turin in the past few years have been confirmed, starting from the one that represent the most the social hub nature of the festival: devised in 2014 in partnership with Absolut – iconic Swedish vodka -, Absolut Symposium actualizes the classical Symposium theme by transforming a whole hotel in Club To Club’s HQ, with a programme built for music lovers, professionals, entrapreneurs and artists alike.
Red Bull Music Academy reaffirms itself as a fundamental partner of this seventeenth edition. A truly essential global reference that has been working side by side with Club To Club for six years to promote and support the best creative expressions in the music field, RBMA will present this year as well a pool of amazing artists from all around the world: Laurel Halo, Mana, Gabber Eleganza performing The Hakke Show, Smerz, Yves Tumor, Demdike Stare and Kelly Lee Owens are just a few of the artists that will take over the RBMA Stage – which will be located inside Padiglione 2 (Pavilion 2) at Lingotto.
Last but not least Dance Salvario, the block party involving the entire San Salvario neighborhood, will be back with live music, public talks and much more.
As always, the festival is made possible by the invaluable contribution of prestigious institutional and private partners, all of whom enhance its very definition: Regione Piemonte, Compagnia di San Paolo and Fondazione CRT this year will be paired by Main Partner Absolut and by Audi, with whom Club To Club recently launched the new summer festival VIVA! in Valle d’Itria (which will be recounted during a dedicated talk).
Besides Red Bull Music Academy, also renewed are partnerships with Tuborg, Danish brand that supports quality live music, KLM, Official Carrier of the festival that will offer discounts to reach Turin thanks to initiatives such as Flying Blue and Global Meetings, and IED, Istituto Europeo di Design. Partnering for the first time with the Festival is New Era, the American brand wore all around the world by athletes, artists and celebrities.
On Friday 3rd November at Lingotto, the main stage will be presented by Crack Magazine, Europe’s biggest free monthly music magazine, providing an independent platform for contemporary art and culture since 2009.
