A unique and unrepeatable experience over 7 days, that highlighted the relevance of music as a real-life social network (down to its subtitle Cheek To Cheek) and gave life to a transglobal programme that is unprecedented in Italy: the 17th edition of Club to Club, amongst the most important avant-pop festivals in Europe, featuring 87 artists from 11 countries (Germany, USA, Italy, Greece, Chile, Venezuela, UK, Australia, Canada, Syria, Norway).
51 acts took to the stage this year, 13 of which were Italian exclusive shows and 12 national debuts over 7 different stages, in the context of the metropolitan city of Turin, in stunning locations from the renewed OGR – Officine Grandi Riparazioni (which hosted Kraftwerk’s The Catalogue as well as shows by Kamasi Washington and Powell & Tillmans) to the post-industrial pavilions of Lingotto by way of the majestic Reggia di Venaria, home for the second consecutive year of the Grand Opening co-presented by Audi.
“We’re particularly proud of the seventeenth edition’s results” says Festival artistic director Sergio Ricciardone. “A curious and beautiful audience had the chance to witness exclusive performances of absolute quality: from the eight 3-D Kraftwerk shows inside the new OGR to the enlightening live show of Arca and Jesse Kanda, by way of the double extraordinary appearance from Nicolas Jaar (who kicked off his set on Saturday with a moving homage to Franco Battiato), the spirituality of Kamasi Washington and the unforgettable visuals from Wolfgang Tillmans over Powell’s thrilling music. The Cheek To Cheek theme has reached completion and we’re now hard at work on the next festival edition”.
Almost 60,000 people (including preview events in Milan), of which 20% came from abroad, took part in #C2C17. 1,300 professionals from all around the world, a precious community that took the opportunity to experience a substantial and articulate programme capable of going beyond musical performance, uniting sound, art and architecture.
Among these, the 21 activities (public talks, workshops, listening sessions) held at the festival headquarters, Absolut Symposium involved 32 guests from venerable names to new mover-shakers of the worldwide artistic scene in dialogue with creatives and entrepreneurs.
Global music institution, Red Bull Music Academy, hosted a stage in a new dedicated Lingotto pavilion for the first time, presenting some of the most exciting acts in today’s scene such as Kelly Lee Owens, Ben Frost, Jlin, Not Waving, Gabber Eleganza, Lorenzo Senni, K A R Y Y N.
A rich programme was also featured in the 2017 edition of the Festival block party Dance Salvario, which engaged the whole neighborhood network in San Salvario – the beating heart of Turinese creativity, including A Great Symphony For Torino, the augmented reality soundtrack created for the city of Turin by Xplosiva in collaboration with IED.
Being part of the Turinese Contemporary Art Week as always, Club To Club worked in perfect synergy with the Contemporary Art Torino+Piemonte circuit, giving life to a real territorial network with some of the most important contemporary-minded entities from the whole region.
An extraordinary success for both audience and critics made possible by the support of prestigious institutions (Regione Piemonte, Città di Torino, Camera di Commercio di Torino, Compagnia di San Paolo, Fondazione CRT, SIAE) and by the fundamental contributions of private partners that work side by side with the Club To Club team to enrich the Festival’s cultural opportunities: Absolut, Audi, Red Bull Music Academy, IED, KLM, Tuborg, New Era, Sant’Anna.
