Red Bull Music presents “DIGGIN’ IN THE CARTS”: the Turin stop of the worldwide tour showcasing two of the most revered Japanese videogame soundtrack composers and Streets of Rage’s music creators, Yuzo Koshiro and Motohiro Kawashima who will perform an exclusive show with Hyperdub founder, Kode9. They will be joined on stage by Nick Dwyer, Tokyo based dj and author of the “DIGGIN’ IN THE CARTS” videoseries.
Yuzo Koshiro is a Japanese video game music composer, arranger, music programmer and president of the game development company, Ancient. He is often regarded as one of the most influential innovators in chiptune and video game music, producing soundtracks across a wide range of genres throughout his career including cutting-edge dance and electronic music, hip-hop, jazz, symphonic and experimental works. He is regarded as “arguably the greatest gamemusic composer of the 16-bit age” and has without doubt created some of the most memorable game music for the late ‘80s and early ‘90s. It was while soaking up the club atmosphere of legendary Tokyo clubs in the early 90s that Koshiro discovered House and Techno. It was through his composition work for the legendary Streets of Rage series that he found a creative outlet for these all-new influences and the result was a video game soundtrack the likes of which had never been heard before. The Streets of Rage soundtracks are considered ahead of their time and many of contemporary electronic music’s most highly regarded artists such as Flying Lotus, Ikonika, Just Blaze, Joker, Fatima Al Qadiri and many more all cite the Streets of Rage soundtracks as having a profound effect on their musical youth.
Motohiro Kawashima is a Japanese video game composer and electronic music producer. Born in Nagoya, Kawashima moved to Tokyo to study. It was while in Tokyo that he immersed himself in the new club culture that exploded in the capital during the 1980s. Yuzo Koshiro, impressed by the quality of his work, employed Kawashima as the first official staff member at his own company Ancient. He soon found himself collaborating with Koshiro on the Streets of Rage series, contributing tracks to Streets of Rage 2. It was in Streets of Rage 3, however, that Kawshima was really able to showcase his ability and his passion for a harder techno sound, producing a soundtrack that was unlike anything else game music had seen at the time. His recent soundtrack for Necrosoft Games, Oh Deer, showed that more than twenty years later, he still manages to work contemporary dance influences into his own unique take on the world of video game music with ease.
Steve Goodman, known as Kode9 (born 1973) is a Glasgow -born, London -based electronic music artist, DJ, and founder of the Hyperdub record label. He has released three full -length albums: Memories of the Future (2006) and Black Sun (2011), both with The Spaceape, and Nothing (2015). As owner of Hyperdub, Goodman has signed artists such as Burial, DJ Rashad, Zomby, Fatima Al Qadiri and many more.
